Devon Primary SCITT

Interested in becoming a primary school teacher?

Devon Primary SCITT was formed in 2001 with a vision to grow the next generation of outstanding teachers through a school-centred route. Newport Academy was one of the founding members and has been one of the schools responsible for its development over this time. Our ethos is one of a personalised approach built on trusting relationships that enable our Trainees to grow both personally and professionally. This is achieved through individual coaching that seeks to develop a trainee’s journey to become the teacher they want to be. A vibrant, inspirational course has evolved that completely connects theories around education and child development by immediately giving Trainees the opportunity to put it into practice within the classroom. Even our training room is set up as a classroom where Trainees learn in a dynamic way as a child, teacher and observer. We are renowned for the quality of our programme having achieved 4 consecutive outstanding Ofsted Inspections. We have among the highest employment and retention rates in the country and are regularly rated within the top five Primary providers in the country within recent NQT Surveys and the Good ITT Education Guide. DPSCITT was voted in the NASBTT national awards as ‘Provider of the Year 2019’ coming top out of the 219 school based providers in the country.

Our original group of partnership schools across Exeter, North Devon, Plymouth and Torbay areas has now expanded to over 50 high quality Primary and Special schools. This means that we are able to provide Trainees with two placement schools within 30 minutes of their home address. We provide an SEND pathway which has been highly successful in developing teachers for employment in special schools. The Headteachers of these schools form the Governing body of DPSCITT and provide its direction and oversight. They employ around 60% of our Trainees each year – the remainder are employed in schools locally and nationally.

In 2012 we became a National Teaching School. This now means we are able to offer fantastic career development beyond the PGCE year. For instance, we have 65 Newly Qualified Teachers on our NQT programme and support them in their first critical year of teaching.

We are passionate about training teachers who want to make a difference to children’s lives. We seek to develop well-prepared, motivated and inspired trainees to send out into the profession with a positive and reflective attitude towards educating children. If you believe that you aspire to becoming an excellent teacher then we would like to hear from you.
